Centro de Acolhimento Santo António in Cape Verde (Reception Centre)

Project of a reception centre in Santo Antão island in Cape Verde, under a contract from Associação Torrejana de Solidariedade Social.

The project is located at a slope and has construction platforms in different quotas that follow the terrain declivity. The total construction area has 1 650 m2, consisting of 5 wings:

- Reception Centre for the volunteers; - Kitchen and canteen buildings; - Reception Centre for 40 people; - Church with a 240 people capacity; - Administrative building.

The centre has also external circulation and civic areas with 3 100 m2. There are concrete pergolas that follow the building metric (6,00 x 6,00 m or 6,00 x 3,00 m modules) and that can develop to covered areas, designed to give new value to the project.

SE2P was in charge of the Stability, Water Supply, Domestic Residual Waters Drainage, Pluvial Residual Waters Drainage projects.

There is a portal frame structure and solid slabs. The support walls in the habitable areas are in concrete, but in the other areas, we chose gravity walls made by local workers and according to local construction techniques.

To define the ground characteristics, we consulted the island topographic and geological surveying, made by Portuguese technicians and compiled in a book that was in FEUP library.

Although the place has a pluvial use public system, there are not basic sanitary infrastructures.We predicted a system to use pluvial water, collected in a strategic placed reservoir, because in this island the rain is intense but short. This water will be used to clean the site and to water the vegetable garden, located in the minor quota platform and designed to employ the users and supply the needs of the centre.

Considering the volcanic origin of the island, the treatment and dissipation of effluents system predicts, after the biological decantation, trenches and filtering ditches along the vegetable garden.
